Word is out that Microsoft will be releasing its Office suite for mobile platforms early next year, starting with iOS. The productivity software will be available as separate apps that allow document viewing and editing (via subscription) on the move.

Several sources privy to Microsoft’s plans are telling The Verge that “the company will release Office versions for Android and iOS in early 2013.”

The productivity suite will debut as several free apps that allow viewing of Microsoft Office documents.

Office Mobile will require an account with the Redmond giant, but also an Office 365 subscription, if the user wishes to make edits as well.

The sources confirmed that iOS customers would be able to load Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents onto their iPhones and iPads. The Office 365 subscription will be available as an in-app purchase.
