The game might get an expansion later during the year

Colin Johanson, the leader of the ArenaNet team working on Guild Wars 2, says that creating a MMO is a major risk for any company at the moment because it involves so much time and has such a big potential for failure.

The developer tells IGN that, “either you’re successful and you’re going to do really well, or you’re not and your company’s toast. If you have a really big backer, maybe you can survive that but it’s a huge risk.”

Guild Wars 2 was one of the biggest launches in the genre in 2012, and the game has managed to prosper, with solid player numbers and a world that has plenty of content to explore.

At the moment, ArenaNet is focusing on the living world events for Guild Wars 2, and an actual paid expansion might be considered later in 2013.
