MLB Power Pros Swings into Action

- With little players

By: Andrei Dumitrescu, Games Editor

For every game out there that sets out to be a serious simulation of a field, be it infantry operations, politics or sports, there is bound to also be a humorous approach to the same subject. For every Armed Assault there's a Wolfenstein, for every Political Machine there's an animal kingdom equivalent. And for every game that ever tried to represent the Major League Baseball season with
pinpoint statistics and general realism, we now have Konami and 2K's MLB Power Pros 2008.

MLB Power Pros is a series which is significant in Japan and that also has a North American version since 2007. The game is all about baseball, but not as you might know it. Instead of big muscled and toned players, you get pint sized cartoonist characters with bats that sometimes seem to be larger than their bodies. And don't even get me started on their helmets.

The new game in the series, MLB Power Pros 2008, promises to offer the same goofy approach that pays less attention to physics and more attention to fun. The game is set to offer ten modes, with League, Exhibition, Practice, Home Run Challenge and a Season mode as the main attractions and the most baseball-infused. The Wii version of the game will offer Mii support.

The Success and the MLB Life game modes are a bit less baseball and more role playing. The player gets to walk in the shoes of one very promising baseball player from the Double-A Minor League and has to guide his characters to the MLB by completing a variety of mini-games and challenges designed to entertain the scouters and improve his various capabilities. After that, the player can begin playing in MLB Life mode, which is designed to offer a perspective on a 20-year long career in the game.

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, says that "We're thrilled to partner with Konami again, and with the baseball season now in full swing, we're proud to offer our fans a refreshingly smart and exciting baseball game that is easily accessible for all ages. Baseball enthusiasts will appreciate the variety of newly added features, intuitive game modes and improved overall feel, and we look forward to hitting one out of the park this season with MLB Power Pros 2008".

The game will be released for the Nintendo Wii, the DS and the Sony PlayStation 2. The handheld version will arrive in the fall, while consoles will get the game in July.
