MKVToolnix, one of the most popular open-source and cross-platform pieces of software for manipulating MKV (Matroska) files under GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems, has been updated today to version 7.9.0.

According to the changelog, MKVToolnix 7.9.0 is a major bugfix release that addresses issues discovered in the previous version of the software. For example, the build system will now check for Qt by default when running configure, a bug has been repaired in the mkvinfo tool.

The mkvmerge tool has received some attention as well in MKVToolnix 7.9.0, which means that it is now possible to specify track properties, such as name or language for AC3 cores embedded in TrueHD tracks, the MPEG program stream handling has been improved, and the MPEG-1/2 parser now works correctly.

In addition, the E-AC3 tracks are now properly handled in M2TS files, the height and width of h.265/HEVC video tracks are now correctly calculated, support for the DTS-HD container format and core-less DTS streams has been implemented, and track selection can now be done by language codes too.

The MKVToolNix GUI has received numerous enhancements

The main attraction of the MKVToolnix 7.9.0 software is MKVToolNix GUI, which has received numerous improvements, among which we can mention new context menu entries for tracks, support for aborting the current job, a new "additional command line options" dialog, and support for changing the interface's language.

Furthermore, several new features have been implemented in the chapter editor, support for saving the main window's position, size and state has been added, support for recently used subtitle character sets has been implemented, a header editor has been added, and it is now possible to set a user-configurable subtitle character set by default.

Among other enhancements implemented in MKVToolNix GUI, we can mention automatic removal of jobs that have been configured by the user, support for displaying country names, a new Preferences dialog, support for frequently used languages, and a new chapter editor.

Last but not least, it is now possible to add attachments via drag and drop from third-party apps, and an online update checking functionality has been implemented.
