Version 7.6.0 of the powerful MKVToolNix software is now available for download, still providing computer users with one of the best collection of tools for analyzing, converting, merging, and splitting Matroska (popularly known as MKV) files on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

The MKVToolNix MKV toolkit consists of various graphical and command-line tools that allow you to extract audio or subtitle streams from MKV (Matroska) containers. It also allows you to add certain streams to an MKV container, as well as to properly set them as default. This releases comes as an upgrade for MKVToolnix 7.5.0 and all users are urged to update to it as soon as possible.

The MKVToolnix 7.6.0 release includes various changes and improvements. There are exactly eight fixes and one new feature to be more precise, all done by Moritz Bunkus. Among these, we can mention a nasty bug that affected all the tools included in MKVToolnix, related to a wrong exit code that appeared when all warnings were finished. The new feature is not that important, as it’s a Serbian (Latin) translation for all programs.

The mkvmerge tool received the most fixes

According to the changelog, the mkvmerge tool received the most fixes. It will now write the correct ID when PCM (Pulse-code modulation) tracks are read from MKV files in Big Endian byte order, sub-chapters with the same chapter UID (unique identifier) are no longer dropped from merged chapters, which are now recursively merged.

On Windows, mkvmerge is now capable of finding tracks in MPEG containers when probing playlist files in the MPLS format, leading to correctly tracking of end-of-file-reached status for various jobs. Furthermore, mkvmerge no longer outputs AC3 streams with the timecode of 00:00:00 in the middle when handling AC3 tracks that were shorter than a split point.

Lastly, the mmg component of MKVToolNix received three fixes and it’s now capable of scanning for more playlists if more than one MPLS playlist is present. In addition, the Language drop-down box is no longer disabled when selecting a chapter track from a MKV file, and the playlist scan results window no longer lists properties in an unescaped way.
