It’s all due to a bug, Windows Insider boss says

Windows 10 build 9901 got leaked a couple of weeks ago, and although it wasn’t an official release shipped to users through the Windows Insider Program, plenty of people rushed to download it and give it a try to see what’s to come in the operating system.

Obviously, since it was just a leaked version, Microsoft recommended users to stay away from it, explaining that, no matter what bug they find in this particular version, no support would be offered.

And yes, that indeed happened, and some of those who came across various issues in Windows 10 build 9901 received no assistance from Microsoft, as Gabriel Aul, Windows Insider boss, explained that the software giant never planned to release this particular version to users because of a critical bug that couldn’t be fixed in time.

No new updates for those running 9901

In case you are running Windows 10 Technical Preview 9901, no other updates would be shipped to your computer, and Gabriel Aul said that it was all caused by a critical glitch which does not allow new builds to be installed over this version.

“9901 has a bug that prevents flighting new builds, meaning that if we made it official it would be the last you ever got,” Aul added.

The same thing also happened when 9888 came out a few weeks before 9901, with Microsoft announcing that those installing this build wouldn’t be able to update to the next official release.

Next build info on January 21

Aul also explained that, while 9901 wouldn’t be officially released to Insiders, a new build was on its way to their computers, but more information will only be provided at the January 21 event that Microsoft will be holding to discuss the consumer experience in the new product.

At this point, the company is already testing Windows 10 build 9915 internally, but there’s still no confirmation that this could indeed be the version that might be shipped in late January.

More information, however, will be disclosed in just a couple of weeks, as Microsoft is very likely to share new details not only on Windows 10 but also on Windows Phone 10.
