Martin Wimpress, the lead developer of the Ubuntu MATE operating system, has had the great pleasure of announcing earlier today that the highly anticipated MATE 1.10 desktop environment has been officially released.

MATE 1.10 represents more than a year of work on the GNOME 2-like desktop environment for GNU/Linux distributions, and we already reported on the changes implemented in the new release the other day.

However, today marks the final and official release of the lightweight, traditional desktop interface, which means that distribution vendors can start updating their MATE packages to version 1.10 and make it available to their users.

As usual, Arch Linux developers are among the first to add the MATE 1.10 packages in the default software repositories of the acclaimed GNU/Linux operating system, so if you're using Arch Linux, go ahead and install or update MATE.

"After 15 months of development the MATE Desktop team are proud to announce the release of MATE Desktop 1.10," says Martin Wimpress in the release announcement. "We would like to thank every MATE contributor and user."

Highlights of MATE 1.10

Prominent features of the MATE 1.10 desktop environment include support for both GTK+ 2.x and 3.x GUI toolkits, though the GTK+ 3 support is experimental at this stage, and support for EPUB files has been added to the Atril document viewer.

The Caja file manager now includes an extension manager, allowing users to enable or disable plugins during runtime, and the libmatemixer audio mixer library has now been included so you can interact with the mixer functionality of the PulseAudio, OSS, and ALSA sound servers.

Last but not least, the MATE themes now support the new pop-over and client-side decorations (CSD) features found in GTK+ 3.16, and numerous memory leaks have been plugged. Download the MATE 1.10 sources right now from Softpedia.
