On Tuesday, July 2, an earthquake hit the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Information released by the US Geological Survey says that the quake’s magnitude was one of 6.1.

The shake was followed by two aftershocks, whose magnitude measured 5.3 and 5.2, respectively, WebProNews informs us.

Specialists explain that the earthquake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles (roughly 10 kilometers). It occurred close to the city of Bireun, in Sumatra's Aceh province.

No tsunami warnings have thus far been issued by local authorities and high officials.

Because it struck in a mountainous region, the shake caused a series of landslides. Eleven deaths and several dozen injuries have been reported until now.

Six of the people who died when the earthquake struck were children. It appears that they lost their lives when a local mosque collapsed.
