LxPup, a Linux distribution based on Puppy Linux that uses the LXDE desktop environment, has been updated to version 14.10.01 and it comes with a lot of interesting features.

Puppy Linux is one of the smallest and one of the lightest distributions that can be found. It's been out of the news lately and it's not getting the same kind of attention that it used to have, but the OS is actually utilized as a base for numerous distros. LxPup is just one of them, but it has been very well received by the community and users really seem to like it.

LxPup is a very interesting project because it comes with a variety of flavors that are quite different from one another. Despite being a rather small OS, the developers have put together a number of different revisions aimed at users with different configurations, both with PAE and non-PAE support.

LxPup has the smallest possible size

It's true that you can get other Linux distributions that are smaller than LxPup, but that's not the point. This operating system comes with a full desktop environment and a complete set of applications installed by default. At just 218 MB, LxPup is very small for what it offers in terms of features and apps.

"LxPup is a version of Puppy Linux using the LXDE desktop environment and is an updated 'descendent' of loukitchou's LxPup13.01. LxPup offers the Openbox window manager, LxPanelX (a fork of LxPanel) panel manager and PCManFM file manager. There are various 'flavours' (currently 4+2 *) of LxPup built as derivatives of official Puppy Linux builds thereby offering different kernels and access to the software repositories of the base Puppy."

"LxPup combines all the significant advantages of Puppy Linux - small iso size, extensive hardware support, wide range of applications built-in, live cd and frugal installs, friendly supportive user forum etc etc, with the lightweight but modern LXDE desktop environment," say the developers on the official website.

There is little other information about it, but there are some interesting aspects of the distro nonetheless. For example, it's compatible with a number of repos, including Slackware 14.0, users have access to quite a few Linux kernels, and it can be installed in a number of ways that can leave a smaller footprint on the system.

If you want to give it a try, you can download LxPup 14.10 right now from Softpedia. It's a Live CD and it runs beautifully in a virtual environment.
