Detective John Luther is back to work, will get some closure

“Luther” ran for 3 seasons between 2010 and 2013, and despite being one of the most critically acclaimed dramas on BBC and a fan-favorite to boot, the network hesitated in bringing it back for another season. This, despite leading man Idris Elba’s repeated pleas to give it another go and his statements that he would put off any other project just so he could do this one.

Fans’ prayers have been listened to. Elba’s too. BBC America and BBC Drama Productions are bringing the series back for a 2-part miniseries that will air on BBC America later in 2015, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Production will start in spring 2015, in and around London, and will bring back together the old fun gang. Obviously, that also includes Elba himself.

Series creator Neil Cross is also coming back and he’s thrilled at the news, telling THR in a statement that he hasn’t stopped thinking what Luther might be up to since he left him on that bridge at the end of season 3.

“So I decided to find out. We're putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work,” Cross adds.

This can’t be a coincidence, but just the other day, confirmation came that Fox had secured the rights and asked for a pilot for an American version of the show, with Elba and Cross on board as executive producers.

When this got out, fans of the original series reacted negatively, because that was further proof that this peculiar detective story (where the monsters caught by Luther probably pale in comparison to his own) was a hit. BBC had no reason not to renew it – and it seems that network bosses have finally come to see things this way as well.

Hopefully, on these two hourlong special episodes, Luther will get some kind of closure, satisfying both for fans and for Luther himself.
