Fashion’s “it girl” has an off night at industry’s most important annual event

Everybody who’s anybody in showbiz and the fashion industry came out last night at the MET Gala 2014, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, to celebrate the opening of the Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit. Oscar-winning actress and fashion’s “it girl” Lupita Nyong’o was also there, but she was having an off night.

The theme of the evening was old-school glamor since James is considered “America’s First Couturier.” Some celebrities even stuck to a black and white theme, but Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief and organizer, wasn’t among them, so it was probably not an official thing.

In other words, Lupita didn’t miss the mark because she opted for a bold color, a bright shade of spring green. As you can see in the photo above, the gorgeous actress, who rose to international fame thanks to her amazing performance in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave,” tried to channel her inner flapper girl, but she failed because of her very busy Prada dress.

Lupita also wore Prada at the Oscars, where she won her first Academy Award and, because of that icy-blue creation, she was considered one of the most fashionable up-and-coming actresses. This would explain why she turned to the same house for this important event, but the results were not even comparable.

Last night’s Prada dress was actually a brown tank dress with a neon-green net on top of it. Voices online compared this net to a dreamcatcher, which makes sense since it also had green feathers on the sides. Because this wasn’t bad enough, the net also had oversized green gems hanging here and there.

In a bid to play into this flapper girl look, Lupita paired the dress with a bejeweled headband, and shoes and clutch matching the shade of green on the dress. She seemed happy with the result and, to her credit, she probably worked this outfit better than any other woman could have, but considering how fashionable she can be, this was utter disaster on her.

In fact, this was the worst thing about Lupita’s outfit: because she’s been hailed the “it girl” in fashion, expectations were high she would make a memorable and very stylish appearance. After all, she’s always been a pleasure to look at on any red carpet and, until now, she never got one single outfit wrong.

With regret, pundits have placed her on the worst dressed list this year at the MET gala, one level above Kate Upton, whose Dolce & Gabbana illusion dress was just as criticized online as Lupita’s.
