More rumors emerge on the Lumia Denim successor

Word has it that Lumia Denim is ready to be released to Windows Phone devices across the world, and the first handsets could receive it in the coming weeks, but people have already started wondering what could come next after this particular update.

A report published by WMPowerUser reveals a name which could make sense at some level for Windows Phone users: Emerald.

While there are absolutely no other suggestions that this could be the name of the next Lumia firmware update, it turns out that screenshots which are allegedly real have already reached the web to confirm that Emerald could follow Denim in the release queue.

Microsoft obviously doesn’t wish to comment on this, as Denim is still in the pipeline for most Lumia handsets, but more information should be released after this new firmware version becomes available.

Why Emerald makes sense

As the aforementioned source notes, Emerald seems to perfectly fit the list of firmware versions released until now by Nokia. First, it was Amber (A), then it was Black (B), followed by Cyan (C), and now Denim (D) is expected to ship in just a few weeks.

Emerald, whose first letter could be an indication that Microsoft is indeed considering this name, might be released in early 2015, but specifics are not available at this point, as it’s too early to talk about the Denim successor.

But the adjacent photo published by WMPowerUser indeed indicates a number of changes, including an updated Extras + Info app with a new SpamFilter version.

What’s in Denim

In the meantime, all eyes are on Lumia Denim, which should be here for all handsets in just a few weeks. The update is already available on a number of new devices, but Microsoft Mobile plans to release it to everyone by the end of the month.

At this point, we do know that Lumia Denim will come with all Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 improvements (which include Cortana and live folders), but also with Lumia Camera instead of Nokia Camera, increased photo shooting speed, “Hey Cortana” voice activation, improved Glance Screen features, and better image processing algorithms.

Lumia Denim is installed by default on the new Lumia 830, Lumia 730 Dual SIM, and Lumia 735 devices, and Microsoft said that all the other Lumia Windows Phone 8 handsets should receive it in the fourth quarter of the year, but sources close to the matter said that the update could ship in the next few weeks.
