14 DAY TRIAL // Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520, Microsoft's current flagships running Windows Phone, might not get updated until fall 2015, a new report claims.
Both the 930 and the 1520 are very likely to be replaced by updated models in September or even October 2015, when Microsoft could finally unveil their successors running the new Windows Phone 10.
The report comes via NPU, which claims that both devices would get upgraded hardware and would run the revamped Windows Phone 10, so it's very clear that Microsoft first wants to bring the new OS version to the market and only then bring out its new flagships.
And although it's really hard to tell whether this is true or not since Microsoft does not wish to comment on future projects, such a plan would really make sense, especially because bringing new flagships to the market running the same old operating system would lead to a rather low positive impact in terms of sales.
Early technical specifications
Since we're nearly 10 months away from the debut of these phones, it's too early to speculate on their technical specifications, but the aforementioned source claims that Microsoft has already decided on some of the pieces of hardware to be used on both the 930 and the 1520 successors.
The Lumia 930 successor will come with a 5-inch display, just like the existing model, and could feature a Snapdragon 805 or 810 processor. Microsoft is reportedly working to make this new 5-incher more powerful in terms of hardware performances, so maybe this time the company actually uses a display that supports Glance Screen as well. Since it's a flagship, it's rather stupid to launch without support for one of its best features.
As for the Lumia 1520 successor, Microsoft hasn't yet decided whether it should stick to the 6-inch display or not, and our sources have also suggested that the company is also pondering with the possibility of reducing the size to 5.7 inches. This isn't confirmed yet, but we've asked again for more details on this and will update the article when we get an answer.
Either way, the Lumia 1520 upgrade, which could be marketed as Lumia 1530, is very likely to come with the same hardware specifications as the 930 successor. Of course, specifics are not available right now, as Microsoft itself is yet to decide on the specs of the new devices.
Windows Phone 10 will make its first public appearance next month, during a private press conference at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, but the first build would only be available to users enrolled in the Preview for Developers program.
The final version, however, is likely to see daylight together with Windows 10 in late summer or early fall 2015, so both new Windows Phone devices are expected shortly after that.
