Good news for Microsoft fans that decided to go for Lumia 640 or Lumia 640 XL, as the Redmond-based company has just released new OS and firmware updates for both smartphones.

Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL are the first smartphones to ship with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, which means they come with a few more features that aren't available on many other Windows Phone handsets.

Bluetooth HID support for external keyboard, MKV video support for video playback and many other new features are only available with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2.

However, Microsoft confirmed that Lumia 735 and Lumia 830 will be getting these new features as an update as well. Other OEM devices got the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 as well, such as Prestigio 8500 Duo, HTC One M8 for Windows, BLU Win HD LTE and a few more.

Today, Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL received new firmware and OS updates which make them even better. The new updates enable some new features and bring several improvements to sound quality and other aspects of the phone.

Both phones receive the same set of new features and improvements

According to the official changelog, latest software release for Lumia 640 is Lumia Denim version 02177.00000.15184.36xxx/8.10.15148.160. The same goes for the Lumia 640 XL.

As for the changes it brings, Microsoft announced that this update enables VoLTE (Voice over LTE) support for selected carriers. Also, it adds Wi-Fi calling support for EE UK and T-Mobile USA.

Last but not least, the update should also bring some additional improvements to stability, audio quality, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, national roaming, and more.

Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL changelogs are similar with one exception. The native Wi-Fi calling support for Lumia 640 XL is only enabled for EE UK, which makes sense since Lumia 640 XL is not available at T-Mobile USA.
