Luis Aragones is certainly not the happiest European technician at the moment. Spain registered a shameful loss in Belfast, ending the game 2-3 in front of underdogs Northern Ireland. The Spaniards' loss came as a big blow for the media, who launched an interesting question between football fans: "Should Luis Aragones quit his job?"
If you would have put that question before the World Cup this summer, people would have said you're crazy. Spain managed to have a record of 15 games without a loss
and entered the WC with 3 encourages wins over Ukraine, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.
Still, once they lost to France in the first knockout round, the football fans in the Iberic Peninsula became doubtful of Aragones. Spain's loss in Northern Ireland made a lot of officials think about finding some other man for the job.
Still, Aragones admitted he was wrong and blamed the loss on him, and not his players: "I am fully aware that what happened in Belfast is all my fault and nobody else's. And I will not blame anyone for the loss but myself. I believe that, once you make a mistake, you also have to pay for it. If it will be considered that's I'll be better off, I'll quit the job in no time".
He added: "I have to admit this was a big blow for me. I am honest and I'm not lying when I say to you that this loss has affected be badly. I always believe that, when a team loses, it's all the coach's fault. This time it was obvious. I don't want to leave the national team but, if the public opinion asks that of me, I will go", concluded Aragones.
An opinion poll issued by "Marca" sports newspaper revealed that more than 82% of the respondents agree that Luis Aragones should quit the job and let another coach continue the Euro 2008 campaign for Spain.
