Switching automatically between integrated and discrete graphics is a capability that most people are looking for on any of today's systems, and it looks like LucidLogix' Virtu software enables this for even rival hardware.

Graphics switching technologies are definitely not something all that new, but they definitely came a long way since they were first developed.

Originally, OEMs had their own solutions that needed users to input something in a certain program in Windows. This allowed the OS to choose between the integrated and the discrete GPU, though it took time.

Then, NVIDIA created the Optimus technology, which did this automatically and seamlessly, since chips with built-in graphics were getting widespread.

Eventually, AMD developed its own Switchable Graphics technology for notebooks, but this left out the desktop systems with Intel Core CPUs and AMD discrete graphics.

In comes LucidLogix with its Virtu software, which can perform this function for pretty much any CPU/GPU combination.

In fact, just today (April 8), a press release announced that all desktops using Intel H67 or Z68 motherboards with AMD Radeon HD 6000 cards can make the best of both worlds.

In other words, the LucidLogix Virtu GPU virtualization solution has been validated on the AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series GPUs.

“The AMD Radeon HD 6000 series is an excellent complement to the Intel media features such as QuickSync,” said Offir Remez, Co-founder and president of Lucid.

“Pre-validating vendors HW and drivers represent another step towards a robust ultimate, no-compromise entertainment experience.”

The Virtu allows for easy switching while not impairing the AMD Eyfinity and CrossFireX multi-GPu technologies in any way.

“Virtu is a powerful and flexible vendor-agnostic desktop solution that enables a system’s display to be connected either to onboard graphics or to the discrete GPU,” says the press release.
