As expected, Canonical will officially announce today, February 26, the immediate availability for download and testing of the Beta release for the Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, and the recently approved Ubuntu MATE operating systems.

As of February 20, the Vivid Vervet development is in feature freeze, which means that from now on only major features will be implemented and important bugs fixed for the Final Beta version, due for release in exactly one month from today, on March 26.

Ubuntu will also participate in the Final Beta release, but for now, you will have the pleasure to test only the aforementioned distributions. As such, we’re happy to announce that we’ve taken the Lubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) Beta 1 operating system for a spin and created a short screenshot tour for your viewing pleasure.

Powered by Linux kernel 3.18, the distro still uses Firefox 34

To our surprise, we’ve discovered that the Lubuntu 15.04 Beta 1 distribution is powered by Linux kernel 3.18.0 and not the recently released Linux 3.19 kernel as everyone expected. In addition, the first Beta of Lubuntu comes with some outdated software packages, such as the Mozilla Firefox 34.0 web browser.

Among other pieces of software included in this unstable release, we can mention Audacious 3.5, GNOME MPlayer 1.0.9, AbiWord 3.0.1, Gnumeric 1.12.18, Transmission 2.84, Pidgin 2.10.9, as well as Sylpheed 3.4.2.

Download Lubuntu 15.04 Beta 1 right now from Softpedia, while keeping in mind that it’s still a development version that should not be installed on production machines where stability is extremely essential. The rest of the Ubuntu editions are also available for download today from our website, so don’t hesitate to search them on the Linux Homepage.
