This is just a maintenance release for Lubuntu

Lubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 (Vivid Vervet) is now out and ready for testing. This LXDE-based distro doesn't have too many changes worth mentioning, with the exception of the base.

Not all of the Ubuntu flavors release this kind of Alpha version. Xubuntu, for example, doesn't follow this model, but the team behind the Lubuntu decided to push the second Alpha out the door, even if they don't have much to show for it.

Lubutu is an operating system built to run on old or low-end systems and is doing this with great success. It has some ridiculous hardware requirements and runs just fine on PCs that are more than 10 years old. In fact, it's the lightest Ubuntu-based system and the perfect solution to replace something as old as Windows XP. They do share a relatively similar desktop design.

Lubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 (Vivid Vervet) is not all that interesting

Lubuntu is still using LXDE, but that is about to change. Unfortunately, that change won't be happening in the development cycle for 15.04 and users will have to wait. Lubuntu will keep the name, but it will be using LXQt, which is a new desktop environment still under construction.

"LXQt is still in development, so Vivid Vervet is another bug fix release," is noted on the official website. Also, there is a strange entry regarding the kernel in the announcement that mentions the integration of the 3.16 kernel. That is actually not true. Lubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 is based on Linux kernel 3.18.0, so that is a mistake.

According to the developers, a Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MB of RAM will most likely be able to run the OS. More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download the Lubuntu 15.04 Alpha 2 (Vivid Vervet) Linux distribution right now from Softpedia.
