14 DAY TRIAL // Lubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal), a fast and lightweight operating system developed by a community of free and Open source enthusiasts, has been announced by Canonical.
Lubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.10 share the same Linux kernel, 3.5.0-17.28, which was based on the v3.5.5 upstream Linux kernel.
Highlights of Lubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal):
• A completely new icon theme has been added; • A new wallpaper has been added and the current theme has received several improvements; • A selection of community wallpapers has been added to the distribution; • The integration of many applications with the new artwork has been improved; • A new version of the session manager is available, including more customizations and integration options (not enabled by default, but available for testing); • A new version of pcmanfm (file manager), including at lot of bug fixes, external thumbnailer support, multiple screen support; • Notification-daemon has been replaced for xfce4-notifyd on the default installation, to display notifications; • Catfish, a searching utility, have been added to the default installation;
Known issues include several problems with PPC, black background and a black font for some tooltips, execute in terminal is not working in pcmanfm, software sources takes 30 seconds to load, and Haswell processor graphics is not fully supported.
The system requirements are pretty low, as expected from an LXDE distribution. A Pentium II or Celeron system with 128 MB of RAM is the bottom-line configuration.
