Lubuntu is the new kid on the block and Canonical has just announced that it has reached version 11.10, along with its older brothers, Ubuntu 11.10, Xubuntu 11.10 and Kubuntu 11.10.

Lubuntu is based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) and its goal is to provide a lightweight distribution, (with all the advantages of the Ubuntu world (repositories, support, etc.)), that anyone can use, no matter how old the PC.

The target user group for this flavor of Ubuntu will be either those users who might not be proficient in using command-line tools or those users who might not have enough resources for all the bells and whistles of the "full-featured" mainstream distribution.

Lubuntu 11.10 uses applications like Chromium, Pidgin, Audacious, Sylpheed for email, Transmission for torrents, Abiword as a word processor, and has one game, Ace of penguins.
