62-year-old Audrey Stone of Brewster, New York, now owes her life to her service dog, Figo. Thus, it was this past Monday that the legally blind woman was nearly killed by a mini school bus. Luckily, Figo was there to save the day.

The pooch jumped in front of the vehicle and was the first to be struck. True, the 62-year-old woman also sustained some injuries, but the officers who investigated the case agree that, had it not been for Figo, Audrey Stone would have been in far worse condition.

The driver didn't see the woman crossing the street

Information shared with the public says that the incident happened at about 8:15 in the morning local time. Apparently, the bus driver failed to see Figo and his owner crossing the street because he got distracted by traffic.

The pooch, however, saw the bus and realized that 62-year-old Audrey Stone was in danger of getting hit. To save his owner's life, the dog jumped in front of the vehicle. The impact was severe enough to leave him with soft tissue injuries and to fracture his right front leg.

“The driver’s eyes were occupied on the North Main traffic,” said Brewster Police Chief Del Gardo. “It looks like the dog tried to take most of the hit for her,” added Paul Schwartz, the manager of a gas station close to the scene of the crash, as cited by Medical Daily.

As for Audrey Stone, she suffered a cut to her head and fractures to an elbow, her ribs and an ankle. Medical experts say that, although the crash did leave her pretty shaken up, the woman will make a full recovery.

Even injured, the dog stayed by his owner's side

Although badly wounded himself, brave and loyal Figo refused to leave his owner's side when medical crews arrived to tend to her injuries and carry her to the nearest hospital. The woman herself kept calling out for the dog.

Once the 62-year-old was put in an ambulance, Figo was too taken to a veterinary clinic where doctors patched up his wounded leg. Like his owner, he is in stable condition and should recover just fine from his injuries. Eventually, Figo and Audrey Stone will be reunited.
