Tablet makers will have another chip to play around with for a while

For all its attempts, Intel still hasn't managed to persuade most of the world that tablets based on x86 processors are a good deal. It's not giving up though.

In fact, it is preparing some new Bay Trail central processing units for the second quarter of 2014.

Bay Trail is a codename for its ultra-low voltage Atom processors.

The new CPUs will have prices of $15-20 / €11.06-14.74, around $12 / €8.85 below those of current-generation Bay Trail.

Bay Trail-T, for example, like Atom Z3740 and Z3770, sell for $32 / €24 and $37 / €27, respectively. And that's with subsidies. 10% is sheared off the price when bought in bulk, but even so, the tag is high compared to ARM processors.

Thus, only in 2014 will Intel be on equal footing with the likes of NVIDIA, Mediatek and Qualcomm.
