An old lottery ticket turned out to be a winner for a man facing financial troubles in Chicago. Ricardo Cerezo bought a bunch of tickets which he placed in a cookie jar and forgot about.

Three months after acquiring one such ticket, his wife convinced him to get it checked out. She only came upon the tickets in May, and the lottery results came in on February 2.

"File a claim," the scanner alert at a local 7-Eleven read when he swiped it.

According to the Courier Mail, Cerezo had won $4.85 million (€3.77 million) and he had no idea. Now he is advising all buyers that older tickets should not be thrown out.

Cerezo plans to pay his mortgage and give some of the money to his children. He has also mentioned supporting charities and sharing some of the newfound wealth.
