Scientists find people with fewer natural teeth perform poorly on memory tests

Here's one very good reason to never skip brushing your teeth and never cancel dentist appointments: scientists say that people with fewer natural teeth have poorer memories.

This isn't because old age, tooth loss and a decline in memory abilities are all part of the same package deal.

According to Live Science, it's because the presence of natural teeth has a positive impact on cognitive functions.

Experiments on mice have shown that animals whose natural teeth are removed, sooner or later experience learning and memory problems.

This probably happens because their brains stop receiving sensory signals from the teeth.

Although they make it possible for individuals who lack natural teeth to continue eating as they did before losing their chompers, artificial teeth cannot send any sensory signals to the brain.

In time, this affects the brain and fosters impaired memory abilities, scientists suspect.
