Hackers part of Team Dig7tal wanted to demonstrate the presence of some security holes on the site dedicated to the Photography Masters Cup, the international award that honors color photography. Another target is the site of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (lanl.gov), a site operated by Los Alamos National Security.

The site of the Photography Masters Cup (thecolorawards.com) was defaced to force its administrators to patch up the security holes.

“Dear Admin, We are the ones that lurk in the Shadows, we do not know your style, but we know your flaws, we do not look for retribution, but a revolution, you have been warned,” the hackers wrote on the defaced page.

As they explain, the Los Alamos National Laboratory seems to be better prepared to handle attacks. It is, after all, a US government site operated by Los Alamos National Security.

“I was injecting the site very early in the morning and then left after a bit to go to sleep, when I came back to inject again I had discovered that the vuln had been fixed. It appears they have a very proactive defense team,” the hacker DMT wrote.

However, before the vulnerability was addressed, the hacker managed to gain access to some information, including mailing records, and leaked a small data sample online.

“You may be asking my reason for doing this? Simple: I detest the government, especially one that tries to convince the population they are good and in it for the people, when really they are just in it for the profits,” the hacker said.

“I do like science, and Los Alamos has done some good work, but I don't [expletive]-ing care. They are registered under the government, they are in the pocket of the government, so they were my target.”
