14 DAY TRIAL // Shayne Lamas, daughter of former TV heartthrob Lorenzo Lamas and Michele Cathy Smith, and a relatively famous reality star, has been told she couldn’t have babies anymore after an uterine rupture that ended her most recent pregnancy and almost cost her her life.
She never lost hope of adding to her family with husband Nik Richie, so when her step-mother offered to help them out by acting as surrogate, she could almost not believe her ears. Their beautiful and out of the ordinary story is featured in this week’s issue of Closer magazine.
A very modern family
Lorenzo Lamas is now at his fifth wife: Shawna Craig is actually one year younger than her step-daughter and admits that she never wanted children of her own, whether with Lorenzo or any other man. However, she couldn’t pass up this chance of offering Shayne the greatest gift possible, especially after becoming acquainted with her heartbreaking story.
She tells Closer magazine that she’s happy she can make her and Nik’s dream come true, by carrying to term a baby boy.
The online preview issue doesn’t say when the child is due, but it’s clear that the entire family is cherishing this wonderful experience together.
In fact, Shayne says, Shawna is “like a soul sister” or an “angel” who has blessed them all with her kindness, generosity and selflessness.
“It is weird,” the 29-year-old reality star adds. “Somebody else carrying your baby is weird. But I lost my son, and now Shawna is carrying my son. I have just been given the biggest blessing in the whole world and I will always be grateful.”
A terrible tragedy
Shayne and Nik have a daughter together, who was born in 2011 and whom they named Press Dahl Lamas-Richie, for which reason they were severely mocked online and in the tabloid media.
They were married 1 year before that, after a very short and whirlwind courtship, which started right after she blew off her engagement to Bachelor Matt Grant, who proposed to her on the season finale. Obviously, that prompted rumors that all romances on The Bachelor were fake and that the romantic storylines were scripted to make the dating show more interesting.
An unfathomable possibility, we know!
In early 2014, Shayne was rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a uterine rupture. Doctors struggled to save her 20-week baby boy, but were unable to. Shayne too was touch-and-go for a while, slipping into a coma and even going into cardiac arrest, as per her husband’s later account.
They had confirmed the pregnancy by surrogate just days before they came out in the open with the story of Shawna’s amazing gesture.
