CI Games has talked a bit more about Lords of the Fallen, the upcoming medieval fantasy role-playing game, and how it stands out from Dark Souls 2 through quite a few different gameplay mechanics and design choices.

Lords of the Fallen was revealed some time ago by CI Games as a brand new intellectual property that delivers a great-looking fantasy role-playing game experience centered around challenging boss fights and the acquisition of better and better loot.

As you can imagine, comparisons were immediately drawn to the likes of Dark Souls 2, seeing as how the title made by From Software also emphasizes the challenging nature.

However, CI Games boss Tomasz Gop has discussed this comparison with IGN and emphasized some of the different ways Lords of the Fallen stands out from the other RPG.

"I think there are a lot of differences between the Souls series and this game," he admitted. "For example, the art direction - I don’t think we’re that dark. For example, the story prominence, as it’s more prominent with Lords of the Fallen."

"Also, even on the combat side not everything feels like it was inspired by the Souls series; we’re more arcade-ish, faster-paced, more combo- and slasher-orientated, even though it’s definitely not a slasher. It’s a technical game, but still I think it feels a bit more that way. So I’m not afraid of the comparison."

Even so, Gop admits that there are some similarities and that the team at CI Games has looked towards the RPGs from From Software for inspirations while working on the new project.

"Having said that I’d be stupid and dishonest to say there are no Dark Souls inspirations in the game whatsoever. No, I will also commit to that because Dark Souls is a wonderful game and if anyone sees good similarities between Dark Souls and this game, I’ll be happy to commit to that. If anyone says we’re a rip off, I’d be sad, but of course then maybe we need to work harder to be different next time. But I don’t think that’ll happen."

Dark Souls 2 has just been released for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 and has impressed quite a lot of hardcore RPG fans with its challenging nature.

Lords of the Fallen is set to debut this fall for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, so it's going to be interesting to see how it can innovate in the genre.
