The Lord of the Rings movies have been some of the best adaptations of fantasy works ever and one of the most impressive aspects was the sense of scale they delivered, the realistic depiction of massive clashes of powerful armies.

The various Lord of the Rings video game adaptations have not managed to do the same thing, despite the obvious possibilities of the medium, but it seems that in the near future that is about to change.

Ruth Tomandi, who is a game producer working on the new The Lord of the Rings: War in the North at Snowblind Studios, has told VG247 that, “I think we’ve tried to really branch off the giant scale that they did so well in the films, they really nailed that.”

The developers added, “We’ve really been trying to get that really expansive sense of Middle Earth is a huge place full of mystery and adventure. So we try to get big vistas in the outdoor areas as much as possible.”

The publisher of War in the North is Warner Bros. but the company has chosen to have War in the North developed independently, with no input coming from those who have created the movies or those who were involved with previous titles based on the same universe.

Tomandi also talked about the possibility of extending the game experience via downloadable content, saying that it has been discussed inside the development team, but that no decision has been made on what will be released or when.

War in the North is an action and role-playing mix that will be played from a third-person perspective and will focus on the little known northern theater of the War of the Ring.

Warner Bros. has recently confirmed that War in the North is set to be launched on November 1 in the United States on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC.
