Video game developer Turbine is aiming to eliminate any fears about the future of its own The Lord of the Rings Online by announcing that its licensing deal for the universe in which the MMO takes place has been extended until 2017.

The information comes after the company announced that it was no longer planning to deliver any kind of traditional expansion for the game.

On the official forums, a community manager states, “We have said as far back as July of 2013, we plan to support LOTRO for many years to come. I really want to be as clear as possible on this subject to avoid any further confusion or misunderstanding. The license was renewed.”

Turbine was one of the first MMOs to experiment with a free-to-play structure and managed to attract a lot of players by dropping its monthly subscription.

It’s currently unclear how the studio plans to support The Lord of the Rings Online in the coming years.
