The development team at Turbine, the company running the Lords of the Rings Online MMO, has been hit by new layoffs which might have long-term impact on its development process and on the launch of the Infinite Crisis Multiplayer Online Battle Arena title.

Warner Bros., the publisher that handles both projects, tells Gamasutra that, “As part of our normal business process, we’re routinely looking at the strategic alignment of our company. Unfortunately, in order for us to invest in growth areas at Turbine, we have to eliminate some positions.”

Turbine is now structured in a way which reflects the realities of the MMO marketplace.

At the moment, a new expansion is being created for The Lord of the Rings Online, which has been in good shape financially since the team made the switch to a free-to-play system.

Infinite Crisis is a new MOBA that uses characters drawn from the DC comics pantheon, designed to compete directly with DOTA 2 from Valve, League of Legends from Riot Games and the coming Heroes of the Storm from Blizzard.
