Software to address security concerns unique to iPhone users

Lookout Inc., a smartphone security company with over 12 million adopters on the Android front, is making a foray in the iOS market with its free security application that has been updated to meet specific needs for users of Apple’s portables.

Released just minutes ago in the iTunes App Store, Lookout Mobile Security doesn’t check for malware, but it can find your lost iPhone, back up your data and protect your personal information, manage your privacy, and look out for unsecured WiFi networks.

Lookout is the #1 free security app that protects and finds mobile phones, according to its developers.

The Android version of the app, used by no less than 12 million smartphone owners at the moment, screens for malware as well. Why? Because, unlike the Apple App Store, the Android Market is more open to all types of software that does’t have to go through Google’s approval net.

“We’re prioritizing the problems on each platform,” said Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer and co-founder of Lookout.

According to Mahaffey, quoted by the New York Times’ Bits blog, the app might screen for malware in the future.

“I do think that at some point malware will probably affect the iPhone,” Mr. Mahaffey said. “There’s no magic pixie dust in the iPhone that makes it immune, but it hasn’t historically been a publicized problem.”

The description over at iTunes says you can use Lookout to ensure security for the following activities:

· Find your lost or stolen phone, even if it's on silent! · Send a voice message (over VOIP) to your phone when it is lost · Notify you when connecting to unsecured WiFi · Notify you if you are running an out-of-date version of iOS · Back up and save a copy of your contacts · See which apps can access our Location · Manage your iPhone or iPad over the web
