Japanese national broadcaster NHK had a couple of very busy first days of the new year. Bosses from the network kept apologizing to people for what seemed to be a large scale wardrobe malfunction, the Janet Jackson- style, claiming it was nothing but a mere 'illusion'.
The New Year's Eve show on NHK is usually the one that gets the highest ratings in the entire country and this year was no exception. The only difference was that it got so many viewers because it appeared to be a 'nude' show.
Pop star DJ Ozma began to perform during the 57th annual 'Red and White Song Contest' and everything was good. About two minutes into his track (that repeatedly urged the listeners to 'bounce with me'), the backup dancers and the artist himself disrobed and started to dance in their underwear.
While the whole nation was watching and not believing their own eyes, a couple of more concerned viewers (about 250) called in and complained about the indecent nature of the show. This immediately prompted the host to giggle and issue a sort of apology, but only after an entire minute of some more breast and tooshie shaking.
On January 1st, the network also released an apology, saying that the dancers were not at all naked: they were wearing spandex body suits (provided with nipples for women, too!). In other words, they were sorry for showing something that looked like boobs, but were not.
'The dancers were wearing body suits, but we apologize for any misunderstanding', the statement read. DJ Ozma himself was quoted by the local media, as saying towards the end of the show: 'I guess it looked a bit too real'.
Indeed, 'a bit too real' is an understatement. Just watch the clip below to see why everybody thought there were naked people dancing on the stage (for the record: they were dressed in body suits but probably the nipples misled the audience into thinking otherwise).
