A high-school basketball coach was fatally shot in Detroit on Tuesday, April 30, reports say. He had been a member of the Detroit Cody High School community for 20 years.

According to Detroit News, 54-year-old Charles Knott of Westland was fatally shot in his car at roughly 11:20 p.m., on the 11500 block of Petoskey.

A Detroit Police report reveals that the gunman was sitting in another vehicle, approaching the coach's car and firing several shots.

"It's a shame. Coach Knott took pride in his job. A lot of people don't know but he also coached softball, too. Many of his former players kept in contact with him, some on a daily basis," Cody high-school football coach Donald Anderson expresses.

"He was the kind of guy who would make sure his players did their chores at home. He cared about them," he adds.

Cody varsity football coach Calvin Norman explains that Knott stationed the vehicle in front of his building. He hadn't left the car when he was gunned down.

Detroit Police Officer Cassandra Lewis mentions that they have found no motivation in the killing, and are still working on tracking down possible suspects.

"One of his former players called me this morning about (the shooting). [...] I was told he was in his car. You might think it was a robbery but why didn't they take his car?" asks former Cody education technical director Bryant Tipton.

Detroit Free Press wrote that Cody is the third school where Knott, a father of two, worked.

"It's unbelievable. [...] I've heard of a lot of bad stuff. This is as shocking an incident as you will ever get.

"No one ever said anything bad about Charles. We need to bring attention (to the violence). A lot of coaches are fed up," coach George Ward complains.
