Video game publisher SEGA has announced that it is working with International Sports Multimedia in order to create London 2012 – The Official Video Game, a title that will be launched on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft at some point before the start of the real world Olympics.

The developers are saying that more than 30 sporting events will be included in the new game, although it’s not clear which ones will make the cut, and that players will be able to create sporting history in the single player component while also competing with friends online in order to top the leaderboards.

Development of London 2012 – The Official Video Game is handled by the Australian studio of SEGA and the team will be using a state of the art motion capture facility in order deliver an experience that is as life like as possible.

Gary Knight, who is the senior vice president of Marketing at SEGA Europe and SEGA of America, stated, “The London 2012 Olympic Games is sure to be a once in a lifetime experience for many people. The official video game will give people all over the world the chance to participate in the greatest sporting event on earth from their homes, even if they are thousands of miles away!”

Raymond Goldsmith, the chairman and CEO of ISM, added, “London 2012 looks set to be our best ever release in the Olympic Games simulation franchise in terms of both sales and number and quality of events. We are delighted to be working once again with SEGA to ensure we will achieve this historic milestone.”

London 2012 – The Official Video Game will probably consist of a number of mini games, each designed for a type of sporting event, and only a number of the national teams taking part will be simulated. SEGA is also working on an Olympic-based games starring Mario and Sonic.
