F-Secure experts have come across a shady-looking PDF file designed to exploit a vulnerability present in older versions of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. The malicious element is masqueraded as a schedule for the upcoming Olympic Games

The researchers inform that when the file is opened, a London 2012 Olympic Games daily competition schedule, dated October 2010, is displayed in order to avoid raising any suspicion.

While the document is legitimate, being available even on the event’s official site, the exploit it hides is surely something that should be steered clear of.

After analyzing the malicious element, experts have concluded that the exploit tries to establish a connection with a Chinese “student travel” site.

To avoid falling victim to such plots, users are advised to beware of suspicious Olympics-themed emails. Also, it’s recommended that they always keep software such as Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash and Java up to date.
