Though it has been quite focused on releasing new keyboards and headphones lately, Logitech has now proudly stepped up to the stage in order to announce that, after 19 years of development, manufacturing and marketing efforts, it has sold 100 million wireless mice.

Wireless peripherals aren't exactly a novelty or a rare occurrence on today's market, with even headphones beginning to use it more and more.

This state of affairs was made possible by the development of the radio-frequency transmitters/receivers, which Logitech used to make its first RF mouse back in 1991.

RF technology was chosen as an alternative to infrared (IR), as the latter was plagued by line of sight constraints.

The first RF mouse sold by Logitech had a price of $150 when it was released, quite high compared to wired solutions.

Fortunately, means of manufacturing and implementing this technological have evolved over the past 19 years, to the point where Logitech mice with nano receivers sell for as little as $25.

It was this that enabled the peripheral maker to finally reach the massive figure of 100 million in terms of wireless mouse sales.

"Logitech mice have played an integral role in improving the computing experience for millions of people, and our wireless mice build on that heritage," said Rory Dooley, Logitech senior vice president and general manager of the Control Devices business unit.

"Today, our wireless mice deliver a robust feature set combined with unparalleled ease of use and precision,” he added.

“And the new mice we offer in a variety of colors and patterns provide consumers with an element of self expression while they use their laptop and mouse to seamlessly navigate their favorite content," he went on to saying.

The currently best wireless technology used in Logitech mice is Logitech Unifying, which delivers 2.4 GHz connectivity. Full information on all cable-less models can be found here.
