Logitech, one of the world's leading vendors of computer peripherals, has announced today the launch of a series of new webcams designed to provide users with a wide variety of choices for video conference devices of this kind. The Fremont, California-based company has now introduced no less than seven new webcams, designed to seamlessly work with the company's recently-announced Logitech Vid, a free application that is meant to allow users to make video calls using their Logitech webcams. The new summer collection includes the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000, the Portable Webcam C905, Webcam C600, Webcam C500, Webcam C300, Webcam C250 and the Webcam 200.

“Now that Vid is changing the way people stay in touch, it’s the perfect time to pick up a new Logitech webcam and make video calling a regular part of your life,” said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president of Logitech’s Internet Communications business unit. “Logitech is a pioneer in the development of webcams, and our latest products make it easy to see your friends and family around the world.”

In the premium range, the company introduced the Webcam Pro 9000 and the Portable Webcam C905, designed to provide users with high-quality image and video. The two devices have been featured with Carl Zeiss optics with autofocus and a 2MP HD sensor, a solution that will offer an enhanced video and picture quality. Both are priced at US$99.99 and come with Logitech's RightLight 2 and Video Effects.

In the mid-range segment, the new Webcam C600 and C500 are here to provide users with a choice for a mainstream webcam. The C600 model is built with a 2MP sensor and can record HD-quality video and 8MP snapshots (software enhanced). The C500 is built with a 1.3MP sensor and uses a software enhancement to capture 5MP photos. The two are priced at US$79.99 and US$49.99, respectively.

Last, but not least, there's the C300, C250 and C200, all of which have been designed for the entry-level market. The C250 and C200 have been featured with a VGA sensor with up to 1.3MP resolution. Price wise, the three will be available, alongside the aforementioned models, in August for an MSRP of US$49.99, US$39.99 and US$29.99.

It is unfortunate that Logitech does not support its devices on the Linux OS platform.

Having got a C300 webcam, Logitech has since advised that it does not run with Linux.

However, Linux people have a driver for the C300 webcam.

It is unfortunate that Logitech does not provide Linux compatible software, in the same way that Samsung provides the Unified Linux Driver for its printers, enabling them to be run with Linux, by installing that generic driver, which then adds printer drivers for particular printers, as desired.

If Logitech had equivalent software, then its webcams, and its video-calling software like Vid (if Logitech decides to port it to Linux), would be much more usable and popular.

In the meantime, Logitech devices are best regarded as being difficult.
