The free-to-play third-person multiplayer shooter Loadout has just kicked off its cooperative campaign beta test, enabling everyone to try it out for free on Steam.

The game features some pretty over-the-top action and a wealth of weapon customization options, with developer Edge of Reality boasting billions of possible loadout combinations.

The newly revealed campaign mode has players battling an alien menace known as the Kroad, a reviled race bent on exterminating mankind, with the help of their robotic lackeys.

The fresh campaign comes with some exciting new gameplay modes, such as Alien Assault, Hold Your Pole and Protect Your Junk, as well as revamped inventory management to make life easier, and a lot of other neat features.

The campaign consists of a series of missions with various difficulties and objectives, and also includes some progression options for PvP enthusiasts, so you're not forced to play exclusively PvE content in order to nab the goodies.

The Kroad will drop a lot of shiny loot to strengthen your arsenal through the revamped Fusion system, enabling you to recycle old stuff and upgrade your preferred weapons.

The developers have put together a nice instructive video, highlighting pretty much everything you'll be able to do in the brand new campaign, which you can play for free on Steam right now.
