Over the years, the tactic of sending out unsolicited email has degenerated from a great marketing tool to being associated with cybercriminal activity.

Legitimate companies still do it these days, and people have come to refer to this activity as spam, only it is done within a legal framework, with the consent of the user.

All the big names are on the list

Unroll.me, a service dedicated to keeping inboxes free of unnecessary entries, made a list with the companies that were very active in delivering messages to their clients this year.

Taking the first place with most emails sent to customers is marketplace LivingSocial, with an average of 285 emails shot per user.

Runner-up, and at a very short distance, is Groupon, with a total of 282 messages pushed to its subscribers. The top five is completed by high-rollers like Facebook (263), LinkedIn (199), and Twitter (117).

The list continues with other big names and a lower email average, such as Amazon (97), Pinterest (87), Google (62), Google Plus (62), and YouTube (43), making the top 10.

The companies interacting the least with their clients via email are Etsy, eBay, Tumblr, Yelp, and TicketMaster, all of them serving an average lower than 30 messages to users.

Unroll.me also made a top with the services that received the largest number of subscriber requests, and contrary to expectations, none of the aforementioned companies were listed.

In pole position is StumbleUpon, with a 51% unsubscribe rate, followed by MoveOn.org, with 48%, and Jetsetter with 47%. Monster and SlideShare both recorded a subscription drop rate of 44%.

More Unroll.me users have an Amazon account than a Facebook one

Unroll.me also pulled out statistics from its systems to determine the online services most appreciated by its users. One would expect Facebook to rule in this section, but it appears that the social network came in second; 69% of Unroll.me clients have an Amazon account, while 64% of them are subscribed to Facebook.

Google comes in third place, with 58%, while LinkedIn enjoys 52% and Twitter 48%. The rest of the list includes Google Plus, Pinterest, Skype, YouTube, and Apple.

Basically, the largest companies on the Internet also have the largest amount of users, something that was not unexpected at all.

All the data was taken from the systems of Unroll.me and does not necessarily reflect a global view for the brands listed. It just shows what the users of the service face on a daily basis and their online preferences.
