Almost a week and half after the release of the final version for VectorLinux 5.8 SOHO, the VectorLinux team announces the recent release of the VectorLinux 5.8 GOLD LIVE CD and the first SOHO-5.8 alpha Live CD and DVD. According to them, this would be the final release for the 5.8 standard GOLD live.

Among the bug-fixes and improvements, these live CDs enjoy a plethora of applications, specific to a Vector distribution, such as seamonkey Firefox and opera, the newest xfce4 desktop, GIMP and Xara LX, Abiword and Gnumeric, vasm and vl-hot, wireless drivers and configuration tools, support for read and write to ntfs via fuse and ntfs-3g, browser plug-ins and also funny games.

Highlights:

- the hard drive installer, which caused different problems so far, is now fixed and working - either CD or DVD support for the SOHO 5.8 alpha live, even though the CD version lacks some functionalities because of the size limitation - development tool chain and OpenOffice (replaced by Koffice) were removed - 62 additional language packs for KDE for the DVD version of SOHO 5.8 alpha live

Vector Linux is one of the numerous user-friendly Linux distros addressed to the Intel, AMD and x86 platforms, based on the well known Slackware distro. Initially started as a Canadian distribution, Vector Linux is now maintained and developed by an international community, which pays attention to the various needs of the users, especially to the more newbies in the field and those with older PCs, such as the Pentium II series. The most outstanding feature - shared by all the VL versions - would be the way standard installation of system administration applications is made through VASM, which deals with system configuration, and Gslapt, which is configured by default to use Vector's repository and manages software installations and removals.
