New project is a stylistic mess but doesn’t lack a few gems here and there

Miley Cyrus’ much anticipated new album, the one she’s been promoting by twerking all over Robin Thicke and the VMAs 2013, “Bangerz,” will be out on October 4. However, if you want to know if it’s worth your hard-earned money, you can stream it now for free in its entirety.

Listen to “Bangerz” on iTunes now and see for yourself whether what Miley said, of this being her most personal and, at the same time, controversial album to date, is true.

I’d best describe it as a stylistic mess because Miley refuses to commit to just one sound. Far from making her some sort of artistic daredevil, this makes “Bangerz” very taxing on the listener so that, by the third song into it, you too might experience actual fatigue.

Even though it’s all over the place, “Bangerz” isn’t without its gems. “4 x 4” would be one of them, showing just how great this album could have been if, as the NY Daily News also puts it, Miley had set out to create something memorable, something of value, and not just an album that got people talking for being shocking.

“My Darlin’” is the opposite of that, having so much Autotune that it makes it impossible to process that that’s a real person on it.

The same goes for Miley’s much hyped collaboration with Britney Spears, “SMS (Bangerz)” which literally made my ears bleed a little. However, I could imagine myself dancing to it in a club or at the gym, so there’s that.

What do you think? Is “Bangerz” worth any of the hype it’s been getting, or is it just over-processed pop you can easily do without? Let me know in the comments section.
