Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley, was married to Michael Jackson between May 1994 and January 1996. In a new interview with Oprah, she speaks for the first time about her time with the late King of Pop.

Lisa insists that, despite the picture painted by the media, her marriage to Michael was the real thing but it’s only now that he’s dead that she realizes he actually loved her.

Of course, she says, from day one, Michael told her that he wanted a child with her – and he constantly pressured her about it but she couldn’t decide yet since she wanted to be sure about their relationship.

Eventually, she was shut out of Michael’s life, which was his way of handling a problem, Presley says. To this day, she regrets his last phone call to her, when she believes he asked for her help.

In saying so, she also confirms ongoing reports that Michael believed someone wanted him dead to get their hands on his estate and music catalog, now believed to be worth over $1 billion.

“I was so removed from him and he could feel it and hear it,” Lisa told Oprah about the last time they spoke, as cited by the Daily Mail.

“I was very distant... He was asking me, he wanted to tell me that I was right about a lot of people around him. And he asked if I still loved him... I told him I was indifferent and he didn’t like that word,” she said.

“And the final part of the conversation was him telling me that someone was going to try and kill him to get a hold of his catalog and estate. And I really didn’t know what to do with that,” Lisa Marie adds.

Because she wasn’t more open to Michael that day, Presley believes she threw away a chance at saving him: because she could have said something to make things better.

“Naively, I want to say: I wanted to [save him]. Could I have? Had I made a call? Had I stopped being so shut off from him? Had I just said, ‘How are you?’ I really did regret that I didn’t,” she said.

Still, she defends herself, if Michael wanted someone out of his life, he would do it immediately in a blink of an eye, and that person would have no other choice than to go with it.

“But if he didn’t want you around, he could make you go away, including his own family. I think that was a train headed in a certain direction I don’t think anyone could have stopped,” Lisa Marie Presley said in the same Oprah interview.
