Summer is here and people around the world are no doubt eager to go on vacations and enjoy the ocean waters or mountain peaks. Scientifically speaking, heat and abundance of sunlight are two of this season's most prominent resources. For most, this would mean an excellent opportunity to lounge. Liquavista, however, decided to make the best of the season in its own way, namely demonstrating the advantages that its screens have compared to LCDs.
Basically, Liquavista screens are completely visible outdoors, even under direct and bright sunlight. ARMdevices even managed to shoot a video of the demonstration, and what is therein recorded is nothing short of impressive. The video shows not just one, but two distinct such screens next to an LCD-equipped laptop.
What will immediately strike viewers is that the LCD turns up completely blank, just as though it were turned off. This, of course, is not exactly surprising, since sunlight visibility has never really been the strong suite of this technology.
On the other hand, visibility definitely seems to be the forte of Liquavista, since the two prototypes were able to show off their color support and decent frame rate quite readily. Granted, the colors themselves looked a bit bland, but it may be quite possible that sharpness will improve as the technology itself is perfected.
If anything, Liquavista showed that the dream of true outdoor computing is not as far off as it once was. Unfortunately, as with all promising developments, it will still be quite a while before any products make it to the market. To be more specific, the company does not expect its solution to show up in PCs until next year. Nevertheless, the assurance exists that converting from LCD production to Liquavista is easily achievable, which means costs will be the only factor that will influence panel manufacturers’ decision to adopt, or not, this new technology.
