- A lion is hit with a snowball at Hangzhou Zoo, in China |
|
As previously reported, lions at a zoo in China are being hit with snowballs, for visitors' amusement purposes. The big question here is whether or not this registers as animal cruelty, since the animals cannot defend themselves in a situation such as this one. The incident occurred at Hangzhou Zoo lion exhibit, where someone snapped shots and posted online. The animals felt restless, at first the female circling the den, and then trying to hide out. Below, you can see more photos of tourists treating the lion's enclosure like a targeting range, as relayed by China Smack. “I suggest making them go in and have a snowball fight with the lions!” one user commented. “If the lions weren’t locked in a cage, would the visitors still dare to attack them?” another user added. If you agree, leave your opinion in the comment section below.

| Comment #1.1 by: TiggerPlease on 12 Jan 2013, 13:47 GMT | Way to go, China; awesome and classy as always. Wasn't it just the other day that I read that one of your fine citizens sued his wife for having an ugly baby? I wasn't exactly surprised by that--what was surprising is that she just didn't end up in the curbside trash in the first place, like other newborn Chinese girls. The dogs and cats you slaughter for food are actually capable of love and feelings, which is more than I can say for any of your empty souls. |

| Comment #2 by: humane conscience on 12 Jan 2013, 10:08 UTC | reply to this comment | Chinee abuse all the creatures under the sun. They drive up the ivory poaching , eliminating the elephants of the world, overfish the seas and ignore laws on quotas, Overcrowd caged cats and dogs in restaraunt kitchens only until it is their turn to be hung alive and beaten with hammers (to tenderize the meat). Chinee (freak families) eat monkey brain right out of the head of a primate while it is still ALIVE!
BOYCOTT ASIAN RESTAURANTS UNTIL THEY STOP THE TORTURE |
| Comment #2.1 by: Chris31 on 12 Jan 2013, 15:59 GMT | Asian restaurants include many nations, one shouldn't stereotype, although I'm ok with boycotting Chinese restaurants if it has an effect. |

| Comment #7 by: lro on 12 Jan 2013, 10:46 UTC | reply to this comment | This would not be allowed in America. I wonder how other countries will react to this blatant animal cruelty? These people, obviously not humans are "being amused" at hurting inncoent animals for fun. Shame on China if they allow this to continue. |
| Comment #7.1 by: I'm chinese * on 12 Jan 2013, 18:17 GMT | First of all, crazy * happens in America all the time. Some people in America hurt animals for the fun of it. | Comment #9 by: jt on 12 Jan 2013, 11:48 UTC | reply to this comment | I think the people should be put in the lion exhibit with the lions. The lions are there for people to see and enjoy not to be a target for A**holes to pelt with snowballs because the A**hole thinks its funny. |

| Comment #11 by: Olivia on 12 Jan 2013, 12:33 UTC | reply to this comment | For China to create this kinda of outrage incident, seems they are trying to deflect the media from something even Bigger( really think about it, if this was not a prop, just for sport to the highest bidder, they would putting the group of people in with the Lions, and see who wins.) |
| Comment #12 by: fmiles on 12 Jan 2013, 12:36 UTC | reply to this comment | I wish I could say this surprises me but China is not known for human rights so why would you expect respect for animals? |
| Comment #13 by: Tim on 12 Jan 2013, 12:56 UTC | reply to this comment | Put the idiots in the cage with the lions and let the lions have at them. Then we will see how much fun they think it is to hit lions with snowballs |

| Comment #15.1 by: PBQD on 12 Jan 2013, 22:13 GMT | IT IS ALLOWED IN AMERICA LOOK AT THE 60 MINUTES PROGRAM 3 - 4 YEARS AGO SUPPOSED HUNTERS BOUGHT ACCESS TO AN EXOTIC ANIMAL AND, ADMED WITH BOWS AND ARROWS, FIRED AT THESE ANIMALS WHO WERE KEPT ENCLOSED WITHIN RANGE

| Comment #16 by: lion lover on 12 Jan 2013, 13:33 UTC | reply to this comment | is flogging still legal in china? |
| Comment #17 by: bb on 12 Jan 2013, 13:35 UTC | reply to this comment | The Chinese are the most foul, abusive race on this earth. They are the leading market for poachers to sell horns from poached rhinos and elephants and other exotic animals in the misguided belief that they have medicinal purposes. They have tiger farms to raise and slaughter tigers to get around international law. They are the most backwards country and race in the world. They don't believe in human rights and animals are nothing more than something to be exploited and abused by them. Just a foul race of people, you can't even argue it. |
| Comment #18 by: Xi on 12 Jan 2013, 13:50 UTC | reply to this comment | The Zoo in-charge and workers must be done like that. Then they'll feel the pain. And Chinese Govt must take action, like no other country in the world. Then none will repeat. |
| Comment #19 by: Erin on 12 Jan 2013, 14:03 UTC | reply to this comment | If these lions manage to escape and fight back, what will these morons think? How appalling that any zoo would permit visitors to torment captive animals. China is disgusting. |
| Comment #20 by: detroit on 12 Jan 2013, 14:22 UTC | reply to this comment | chinese are thoughtless, imature people. boycott all things chinese, if we can. |
| Comment #21 by: jack on 12 Jan 2013, 16:44 UTC | reply to this comment | what the hell is the matter with people?? the lack of empathy people show animals is truly disgusting. And where was anyone from the zoo to stop this behavior |
| Comment #22 by: TornadoResearcher on 12 Jan 2013, 17:04 UTC | reply to this comment | those people are really sad. There is no excuse for this type of behavior. |
| Comment #23 by: JustMe on 12 Jan 2013, 17:46 UTC | reply to this comment | Yep...., this is Jackie Chan's adorned country and it's people treating things with NO respect or compassion. I say just throw those little @#$#@ in with the lions and see something interesting happen! Oh...., by the way...., why hasn't any news media done something on Jackie Chan's affiliation with the Chiniese Triad in Hong Kong yet? |

| Comment #26 by: lionluver on 12 Jan 2013, 23:06 UTC | reply to this comment | Hey 9 iron...Throw a snowball at me, I'm not in a cage. Such a majestic animal/ Love to see these peeps throw anything at them if there was nothing to stop the lion from tearing their throats out.... |
| Comment #27 by: so sad on 12 Jan 2013, 23:24 UTC | reply to this comment | I wish there could be a role reversal so those childish grown men would know how heartless and cruel they are. It is a proven fact someone inflicting pain and enjoying it on a helpless creature are capable and probably will abuse human beings. |
| Comment #28 by: Susan on 12 Jan 2013, 23:36 UTC | reply to this comment | Animals feel pain. This is horrible and ANIMAL ABUSE.
THIS ZOO SHOULD SHUT DOWN TO PROTECT ANIMALS. |

| Comment #30 by: Neo on 13 Jan 2013, 05:10 UTC | reply to this comment | First of all i feel .. keeping animals in zoo itself is animal cruelty.. |
| Comment #31 by: Susan on 17 Jan 2013, 19:07 UTC | reply to this comment | This is pure and simple animal abuse! Once again....the leaders in China need to do the right thing for the animals they chose to keep in captivity. Absoolutely disgusting to see people treating animals like this. |
| Comment #32 by: traveler on 18 Jan 2013, 15:13 UTC | reply to this comment | The officials have a clear and direct responsibility to protect those animals, and the people need to be educated in such matters. I saw the same thing while in Shanghai during 2000, when multiple young males were taunting and harming monkeys in a cage by offering them burning cigarettes, which the monkeys would reach for without realizing they were going to be burned each time. It was a disgusting and sick display as all of the young men laughed out loud and these acts continued. I was told that I dare not say or do anything at the time, lest the consequences would be dire for me. It was horrible... |
| Comment #33 by: 12know on 18 Jan 2013, 18:35 UTC | reply to this comment | I think it's disgusting! The Chinese think they are so sophisticated and intelligent with their knowledge in the computer industry. But they show what they are truly made of when they deliberately taunt animals in a zoo. |
| Comment #33.1 by: Tim on 22 Jan 2013, 12:42 GMT | Think your confusing the Chinese with the Japenese.... Chinese are known for not careing about lives of animals or people and thier take-out food.. |
| Comment #34 by: cs on 18 Jan 2013, 19:48 UTC | reply to this comment | Yes it is cruel. They should be ashamed! | |
