Police officers in Indonesia are now investigating the death of a male African lion. Media reports say that the animal was found hanged in its enclosure at the Surabaya Zoo, and that evidence indicates that its death was accidental.

For the time being, all that is known is that the big cat somehow got its head stuck between some steel cables. It failed to free itself and, since there was nobody around to help it, it eventually suffocated and died.

The lion was just 18 months old. Its name was Michael.

“We are still investigating how the steel cables could entrap the African lion's head. Michael was relatively young,” zoo spokesperson Agus Supangkat told the press.

“He was only one and a half years old. It could be that he was playing around and somehow his head got stuck,” he added.

Daily Mail shows some pictures of the lion's body while it is still dangling over the ground.

The pictures are fairly shocking, which is why I thought it best not to include them. Head over to the publication's website if you wish to see them, but be warned: they are not for the faint of heart.
