It pains me to be the bearer of bad news, but, according to media reports, the adorable lion cub at Zoo Miami in the US that I introduced you to just days ago is now an orphan.

As reported, the lion cub is now about three months old. Its name is K'wasi, and its mom was four-year-old Asha. The two were very fond of one another, and visitors to the zoo much enjoying watching them cuddle and chase each other around.

Daily Mail informs that the lion cub's mom passed away while in surgery. Thus, staff at Zoo Miami explain that, as of recently, the lioness was showing signs of discomfort and stiffness.

It was decided that the best thing to do was to operate on the feline, determine what the problem was, and fix it. However, while under anesthesia, Asha went into cardiac arrest. Vets attempted to revive it, but, unfortunately, they failed to save its life.

“Following her X-rays and during the exploratory procedure to examine her uterus and other internal organs for any signs of infection Asha's heart began to race and her breathing became irregular,” a spokesperson for the facility said in a statement.

Furthermore, “Zoo veterinarians tried to stabilize the lioness but were unsuccessful. Asha went into cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated.”

Now that K'wasi is an orphan, it is unclear what fate has in store for it. According to staff at Zoo Miami, it would be best if the cub were to become part of a pride either at this facility or somewhere else.
