A new release of LinuxConsole, a modular Linux Live CD, was announced by Yann Le Doar? a few days ago. The new version, 1.0.2008, has been created from a brand new toolchain that's based on gcc 4.2.2 and glibc 2.7. The 2.4 Linux kernel was taken out from this edition and was replaced with 2.6.25.4. It is also patched with squashfs and aufs.

As default desktop environment, GNOME is available in its 2.20 release form. The developer chose this edition on the grounds that it was very stable; it will soon be updated to 2.22. KDE 3.5.9 was not included on the Live CD due to the lack of space. However, this should not stop you from installing it through the modules manager, or you can just wait for a Live DVD release.

For your multimedia needs, you get Mplayer 1.0 RC2 with DVD navigation support built-in. You should note the fact that the developer tested a large number of 3D games with both open source drivers and proprietary ones (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05 and ATI Catalyst 8.6).

Here are some of the applications you will find on the LiveCD:

■ The GIMP 2.4.3 ■ Firefox 2.0.0.14 with Flash and mozplugin ■ Thunderbird 2 ■ X.Org 7.3 ■ Perl 5.10 ■ Python 2.5.1 ■ cups 1.3.5 featuring an impressive number of drivers (more than 6000 of them) ■ 3D and 2D games ■ Mplayer and Xmms ■ Kino ■ Oxine ■ Abiword 2.4

If you decide to install LinuxConsole on your hard disk, you can setup new applications through the modules manager. With it, you can install software like OpenOffice 2.4.0 and 2.3.1, lyx, Enlightenment E17, Apache 2.2.6, PHP 5.2.5, MySQL 5.0.51, and more 2D and 3D games (Glest, Torcs, Widelands, and others).
