Microsoft's Windows operating system continues its downward trajectory on a spiral that is seeing it continually losing “eyeballs.” Even with the launch of Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the fixing of Windows Vista RTM with the release of Service Pack 1, the market share of Windows has continued to drop throughout 2008, and the past month made no exception to the trend. The open source Linux and Apple's Mac OS X proprietary operating systems are eroding the Windows audience bit by bit, and have taken the platform below the 90% market share mark.

According to statistics released by Net Applications, Windows' market share at the end of November 2008 was of 89.62%, down from the 90.46% of the previous month. Microsoft has recently released Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 pre-Beta Build 6801 to testers worldwide. However, even with the service pack and the pre-Beta milestone of Windows 7 leaked and available for download via torrent websites, Windows has failed to receive a breath of fresh air.

Between October and November 2008, the share of Mac OS grew from 8.21% to 8.87%. During the same period the usage share of Linux distributions also increased, climbing to 0.83% from the 0.71% of the previous month. At the start of December Windows 2000 continues to have a market share larger than all Linux distributions, namely 1.56%, that is almost double.

Windows Vista and Firefox have approximately the same market share worldwide. While Firefox managed to nudge past the 20% milestone and jump to no less than 20.78%, Vista, now with SP1, is up to 20.45% from 19.29%. The release of SP3 did nothing for Windows XP, and the operating system continues to lose market share, the most of it going to Vista, especially since Microsoft discontinued retail and OEM license sales of the client as of mid-2008. XP is down to 66.31% of the operating system market.

I am not surprized that MS is loosing market share.
Let them continue to ignore the user the way they do now and the spiral will go down even faster.

I have been an MS addict since 1986, but I am looking into alternative too nowadays !

The adoption of LINUX is painfully slow. Distros like Ubuntu are far superior than XP and Vista in almost every respect. Is amazing how people are afraid of change. I guess this is the reason Microsoft will continue milking his userbase for a long time to come. The bright note is that LINUX is here to stay, and some of us have a real choice now. Thank you LINUX

I don't think you can read into this like that. I think Vista has more than 20% installed base. Think of all those who get Vista to play games rather than surf arround those web sites "partners" of Net Applications. And the ppl who use it mostly for work with other MS apps versus surfing.

And think of all those in Asia who don't have to buy it. Are Chinese sites "partners" of Net Applications too?? And all the hackers here too. There's prolly like 500 million copies installed, but MS only "sold" like half of that (if even). LOL

if u are searching for an alternative ,u should try LINUX .specifically UBUNTU,its marvelous .
it's a DEBIAN based distro, and is very user-friendly.it's highly customizable, like other LINUX distros.DEBIAN itself is great distro .the next best non-DEBIAN alternative is FEDORA .

Get a mac people, if buying new hardware. If you dont like the swiss cheese vulnerabilities of XP or Vista, try a hacintosh to test out the OS X waters. Once you switch you will never miss linux, XP or Vista.

Apple with the newer snow leopard is going to rock even better in Q1 2009.

With a mac you can run windoze and linux if you want. But why would you want to?
You get what you pay for and PC boxes depreciate fast compared to an Apple which stays powerful for years.

In the meantime you can listen to the lies and believe them, oh wait people Vista will be better then XP, oh wait people....windows 7 will be better then Vista....oh wait people Windows ME will be better then windows. Whoa ha ha ha!

Why is gates giggling his butt and holding a Churro? LOL

Mac os x I have to admit is great after buying a mac book pro, and with programs like vmware fusion to keep your windows apps alive while in the mac os x environment there is nothing to give up now. Perfect place for Linux is on those computers that are used for Web browsing. With online apps like google docs and gmail with the exception of gaming on windows, which is starting to lose out to consoles now as well, the windows lock down is definitely doomed to lose cage say in the next decade.

But to confront this article, Microsoft lost fractions of a percentage of market share, that hardly qualifies as a "downward spiral". And below 90 percent at 89.62 percent could qualify as a error in reporting.

Fractions of a percentage in an install base of hundreds of millions is significant, But when your at the top of an ice burg, miles high, its going to take a lot more then 10th of percentages to do any sort of damage or really make a difference.

As long as its the OEM's like Dell, HP etc all at the base of that ice burg holding it up, its going to take giants like those who sell those millions of computers a year to adopt linux and go mainstream and out as a standard before you can really call it progress or a true downward spiral.

When MIcrosfot is at 70 percentage market share of an install base, then you have my attention, but with the redemption that is windows 7 out in the next year or two, I think they will make up for lost ground and the interest gained in linux and mac os, will slowly dwindle, just like Intel vs AMD story.

I tried ubuntu, liked it, loved it, but when I tried to watch a dvd, listen to some wma and access my flash drv, I gave up.

I watch it closely, however, until we can run windows software on ubuntu (without having Bill Gates installed in a virtual environment), i will stay with xp. sorry

I experience a 80%hate20%love relationship with MS products. Hate the monopoly, drm, total control, security and instability etc, but I like that it is a generally 'accepted' standard, at the expense of the total control.

I would switch today if I can do the daily tasks on ubuntu without feeling the switch

MACs? not an option for me. Why help them becoming like MS? Look at the ipods: love the product hate the rest. They are in business to make money. Linux and Mozilla are not in the game for the money

just my 2 and a half cents
