Palm has finally managed to run Linux on their devices, through Lifedrive and TX. The device might be available in the near future, which makes excellent news for many of the Linux fans out there.
By using Opie (Open Palm Integrated Environment), the
device manages to
meet all Linux fans demands. This Open Source concept provides the graphical user environment for PDAs and any other devices running on Linux.
This means that users of the Linux Treo will be able to benefit from sophisticated PIM framework with addressbook, to-do-list, today, mail, drawpad, datebook, texteditor and search-all-facility. All these will run and look just as natural as on any operating system. There are also some Multimedia capabilities provided by the xine based opieplayer2 and image viewer. This also features audio and video capabilities, for high media performances.
There are also included some highly useful services, such as network based installation and setup management as well as PDF reader based on xpdf. There is also an IRC client, konqueror web browser and mail reader Multiple input plugins to ease data input.
The device will support binary compatibility with Sharp Zaurus applications. Most importantly, there will also be included themes and styles to adapt look and feel to your personal flavor. What makes
Linux such an appreciated operating system for mobile phones is the fact that it proves to be highly easy to customize. Users have the chance of making themselves a truly personal device, with a friendly interface.
Linux Treo will soon be available for everyone to enjoy. Users will most probably be made of Linux fans who know enough about the operating system as to fully enjoy this device. A price for the smartphone or when it will actually happen have not been revealed until now, although details should be available in the near future.
