Clement Lefebvre, father of the Linux Mint project, proudly announced on his blog that the upcoming Linux Mint 12 operating system will feature a new desktop interface built on top of the GNOME 3 desktop environment.

Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) will be the first Linux Mint distribution with the GNOME 3 desktop environment. But it will feature a new user interface called MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions), which will look like a normal desktop.

The new user interface of Linux Mint 12 will feature a bottom panel, an application launcher, a window list with currently running apps, a task-centric desktop (i.e. you switch between windows, not applications) and visible system tray icons.

This is what all Linux users were expecting from a desktop environment and from a Linux distribution of our times. We can safely say that Linux Mint will be the new Ubuntu.

Dubbed Lisa, the Linux Mint 12 release will come at the end of the month, around November 20th. Until then, you can download Linux Mint 11 right now from Softpedia.

@„(Mint Gnime Shell Extensions), which will look like a normal desktop.“ -for that reason people love mint!!!

Just use PCLinuxOS, it's always given me less problems than Ubuntu

Um, not really. Even if Ubuntu goes, they have the code base. It'd just be the same thing that happened to Gnome 2. Not to mention their own repo, multiple funding sources, and a Debian edition as a rolling release. They'll survive.

No they are not. They do not have the massive infrastructure of Ubuntu. Their forums are not as rich. IF Ubuntu goes then Linux Mint goes as it relies heavily on Ubuntu's infrastructure of updates etc. Linux Mint is Linux Mint. Not Ubuntu.

As of last month, they are branching off with Mint Debian. To me, it looks like they're gearing up to shed the Ubuntu base altogether anyway.

The problem with Gnome 3 is not just the layout but the underlying stuff being dog slow and resource hungry. Anything built ontop will be just as slow. I personally think the effort would be much better placed into LXDE instead. Its lean, fast and works but needs just that last bit of polish and setup.

LOL. You've definitely got a handle on the use of hyperbole. ;-)

It's true ;) Linux Mint is already #1 on DW and lots of people hate Unity...

Comment #5.2 by: Ron on 08 Nov 2011, 12:13 GMT

"This is what all Linux users were expecting...."
"All", really? :D
But I do agree that Unity is not what I'm looking for either.

Are you switching to Mint, Marius? I'm seriously thinking of doing it. Since it's catching up with (or overtaking) Ubuntu, perhaps Softpedia will be becoming more Mint-oriented :)

Comment #6.1 by: Marius Nestor on 08 Nov 2011, 09:38 GMT

I'm on Ubuntu 11.10 at the moment, but I will definitely try the new Linux Mint interface. Will post later a short report with some screenshots ;) keeping you guys up-to-date :D

Do not forget that Mint is build upon on Ubuntu and it is heavily relies on Ubuntu for most of its code. If Ubuntu dies mint will also die. I also hate unity and Gnome 3. I will try XCFE and LXDE desktop environment. And yeah why switch to Linux mint when there is alternative like Xubuntu and Lubuntu which are also officially supported by Ubuntu. So there is no place to go with mint. I love Ubuntu.

I'll definitely give that a try. Although I don't really hate Unity, and GNOME 3 is cool too.

You are probably a old user of windows. You tried Lubuntu or Xubuntu? They are awesome and feature great customizable interface and yeah they are also lightweight. Try them if you are not satisfied there are more distribution which can satisfy you. But Ubuntu has large number users than any other distro (I think). So you can find any problems answers quickly! In my home we all use Xubuntu and its is just awesome man!!

coming from a 98% Windows 7 Pro 64 user
Best linux distro to date, if Linux could handle 100% of gaming requirements aswell as it's large collection of alternatives to windows software i'd definately use it far more often.
Linux Mint in general
* never an issue with installing
* all codecs out of the box
* all the usuall software u'd need
* a pleasent UI and snappy to boot
* install where and how you want without interfering with other distro's or need for complicated partitioning mechanisms, some of the other leading distro's are M$ like and don't like sharing a HD (Fedora and OpenSuse i'm looking at you)
has the best of all worlds imo, only thing Ubuntu has going for it atm is the Ubuntu Software centre which is very much like the App stores on Smart Phones and imo is visually the best thing Ubuntu has offered to the table in years. Unity sucks, Gnome 3 with Ubuntu atleast for me is very buggy.

and OpenSuse & Fedora have the largest repo's but IMO the OS's are half baked and not very user friendly, meant more for server users.

Mint just works as it always has and Mint 12 is a step in the right direction, unfortunately if you want KDE that has taken a back seat since 10, there still isn't a main edition 11 in KDE form and not likely to be one anytime soon. Gnome is there future unless you go with one of the other Ubuntu derivitives like Kubuntu, Lubuntu etc.

I had it with UBUNTU! The last "UPGRADE" has totally made me rethink my position with this operating system. It is further being eroded and I can't take it NOs more!! So now I want to see if I can step into new territory. I want an os that is WINDOWS friendly, loads fast, but has less bugs. For instance, UBUNTU does not allow me to use the mike in skype. And this last version does not even give you an option to download skype. If I have two browsers open of the same company, I want to be able to find what I want. UBUNTU did that perfectly 8.0, however, it has slowly drifted into an unrecognized terrain. I want to be able to drag and drop icons for shortcuts. UBUNTU use to offer this option. It now display a side bar that forces you to take 2/3 steps, which before you did it in 1 step. I liked fedora, but it had some problems. Is MINT better?
